China's accession to the WTO: a study of the Philippine' revealed comparative advantage, 2002-2006
(2008-10) Allejos, Marianne V.; Flores, Earl De La Rosa
This study analyses the Sino-Philippine trading relations following China's accession to the World Trade Organisation in 2001. In particular, it attempts to determine the comparative advantages of the Philippines and China in the course of 2002-2006. These advantages are drawn from the specialisation patterns of the two by means of the approach known as 'revealed' comparative advantage (RCA). Two measures of RCA are used on the export and import data of the Philippines and China at the two-digit Harmonised System level to determine the advantaged and disadvantaged sectors from the two. Once this is completed, the Spearman's Rank Correlation Coefficient is calculated to arrive at the degree of complementariness and competition between the two. In the light of the evidence, some policy implications are drawn.
