Factors and associated with property and personal crime in the Philippines
(2007-04) Anselmo, Ma. Kristine R.; Kaibigan, Bernardo V.; Pernia, Ernesto M.
This study uses panel data on index crime rates for the 15 regions of the Philippines over the period 1991-2003 to analyze the factors associated with crime in the country. As different types of index crimes are likely to be influenced by different factors, the total index crime rate was disaggregated into two: (a) crimes against person (murder, rape, homicide, an4 physical injury); and (b) crimes against property (robbery and theft). For both types of crimes, the study reveals that unemployment, inflation, poverty, and population density are positively associated with crime. Gross regional domestic product per capita, on the other hand, is shown to be inversely related to crime.
