Item Restricted Correlates of student performance in the UP school of economics(2009-04) Bienvenida, Raya Sabina J.; Encanto, Margarita Angela R.; Pernia, Ernesto M.This study applies the theoretical construct of the education production function to students' performance in the UP School of Economics. By knowing the factors that have a significant association with academic performance, changes could be implemented towards improving students' performance. The results of the analysis show that there are both similar and dissimilar factors associated with each of the four economics subjects covered. Students from families with higher incomes tend to perform better as would be expected. Class attendance is another factor that appears to have a positive impact on the grade of students, although absences may perhaps be compensated by intelligence level and capabilities, as appears to be the case for Economics 106. The level of intelligence in most cases is relevant, but as students move to higher economics subjects, the prior knowledge of economics and other fields such as mathematics, seems to be the more important variable. Aside from student attributes, the role of teachers also matters, as expected.
