Item Restricted Correlation of sports involvement to the academic performance of student athletes(2015-12-14) Buenaventura, Mark P.; Hilado, Ervin John Mikel D.The hard choice of dividing their time between studying and participating in their respective sports has been faced by student-athletes since time immemorial. This study aims to help student-athletes in this decision making process. To be specific, this paper tests the hypothesis that when student–athletes invest more hours into their sport, their academic performance is negatively affected. The hypothesis is tested by looking into the number of training hour per week as a basis for sports involvement and the General Weighted Average (GWA) as a basis for academic performance of student-athletes. The study observed 183 student-athletes from UP Diliman, and using Ordinary Least Squares regression analysis, the correlation of sports involvement and academic performance was seen. Different factors like high school background, number of units taken, college, hours of training, sex, time of training and others were taken into account as well. The results show that there is a negative correlation between academic performance (GWA) and sports involvement (number of hours) which means that as the numbers of hours in of training increase, the GWA decreases, meaning higher grades are attained. In line with this finding, it is recommended that more variables be taken into account for a more precise study, and that the UP Administration make certain changes that would cater to the improvement of a student-athlete’s athletic and academic performance.
