The socio-economic determinants of the adaptability of rural communities to climate change
(2009-03) Eleazar, Erik Jan; Pico, Nathan Michael
The purpose of this study is to identify. the determinants of adaptation in rural communities. This study aims to answer the following question: Is there a correlation between literacy and adaptation to climate shocks? A sample size of around 200 farmers in the vicinity of the Jalaur river system in Panay, lloilo was surveyed. Subjects from various altitudes were taken. Variation of incomes expressed as a percentage is regressed on several explanatory variables including age, gender> family size, farm size, literacy, amount of external credit availed, and the like. Literacy and access to credit are interacted to express the view that access to credit is a channel for literacy to express itself in terms of rural income.
