Cognitive ability, socioeconomic status, and school quality on academic performances of UP Diliman students
    (2016-12) Layug, Wilson Joseph I. ; PariƱas, Jose Miguel T. ; Tan, Edita A.
This study aims to determine how well the marginalized students perform in the University of the Philippines, Diliman considering the disadvantages they may have encountered in their formal and informal education environment. A cross- sectional dataset is used in the study which is composed of 3,702 undergraduate students of the graduating batch of 2014. This study analyzes the influence of cognitive ability, school environment and socioeconomic background on academic performance and derives their direct and indirect effects to obtain their aggregate effect on academic performance. A Two-Stage Least Squares Model is used to estimate the factors affecting academic performance to omit the possible presence of multicollinearity. The result shows that the main determinant of academic performance is his or her cognitive ability. However, high school and socioeconomic background do not have a significant effect on the academic performance of a UP Diliman student.
