The role of marcopper mining corporation in the development of Marinduque
(1980-09-16) Soncuya, Corazon D.; Lo, Priscilla; Santos, Teodoro
This work investigates the role of mining firm in the social and economic development of a province. It argues that the contribution of the firm may be classified into financial and non-financial. Financial contribution consists of contribution to foreign exchange earnings, national product, taxes employment, wages and investments. On the other hand, non-financial contributions consists of physical and social infrastructure, manpower training and community development. When measures of direct contributions were examined, positive contributions of the mining firm were indicated. In order to assess the impact of the firm on the development of Marinduque and its own towns, various social and economic indicators were examined across time and towns. It appears that such indicators strongly point to the important but ill-understood and poorly appreciated contributions of a mining firm to the social and economic development of the community where it is situated
