The female headship in the Philippines: a poverty analysis
(2005-04) Balatibat, Jayline M.; Nierras, Paula Katrina S.; Pernia, Ernesto
The rise in the number of female-headed households is an indicator that models of marriage and family are changing. This trend has been observed in many countries including the Philippines. In development discourses, female headship is of significant interest due to the perceived notion that female headship is strongly correlated with poverty, and that female-headed households are worse off than their male counterparts. This paper is a case study on the female headship in the Philippines. Using FGT poverty indices and logistic regression, this paper suggests that female-headed households are not worse off than male-headed households, and that the poverty-female headship link is weak in the Philippines.
