Regional development in the Philippines: a focus on the Cordillera administrative region
(2005-04-01) Delos Santos, Rosana; Pacannuayan, Ma. Concepcion; Pernia, Ernesto
This paper analyzes the performance of the different regions in the Philippines during 1994-2003. It examines the factors affecting regional development as measured by gross regional domestic product (GRDP) and poverty incidence. The empirical evidence shows that investment, infrastructure development, demography, and health are significant factors in regional development. Some of the regions that post high GRDP per capita and low poverty incidence are NCR, Central Luzon and Southern Tagalog. These regions exhibit openness to trade, high investment share and infrastructure development, and high life expectancy. Furthermore, the study takes a closer look on the performance of the Cordillera Administrative Region as it posts one of the highest GRDP per capita despite its remote location and high poverty incidence.
