The employment effects of tourism in the Philippines
(2009-04) Pau, Andrea Julienne D.; Veneracion, Carmen Cecilia T.
In many developing countries the tourism industry is looked upon as a potential source of economic growth. Many studies focus on the relationship between tourist spending and income, as well as tourist spending and employment. Tourist expenditure affects demand in various other sectors such as hotels, transportation and communication, etc. directly and indirectly. This study uses input-output analysis in estimating the direct and indirect employment effects of tourism in the Philippines. The empirical analysis makes use of estimated employment multipliers, which approximate the number of jobs generated for every marginal increase in tourist expenditure every year from 2002 to 2007.
