Shifting gears: the microeconomics of shifting
(2001-10) OƱate, Ronald Gozum; Romo, Glory Dee Antero; Miranda, Casimiro
This paper aims to find out the relevant factors that induce the student to shift to Economics or Non-economics field of specialization. The total number of family members financially dependent on the household head has a negative effect on a student's decision to shift. And although, in a casual observation, the General Weighted Average influences the student to shift, the study shows that the student enters the School of Economics because of his interest in that discipline. The level of education of the household head also plays a significant factor in the decision-making of the student. He can influence the student since he has the capability to weigh the costs and benefits of the course that he is intending to shift into. Job opportunities reflected in the expected future earnings also play a role in motivating the student in shifting into a particular course.
