Determinants of use of oral rehydration salts for childhood diarhhea case management in the Philippines
(2013-10) Abel, Jemarson B.; Santos, Angelo Gabrielle F.; Reside, Renato Jr. E.
Oral rehydration therapy (ORT) is a medicinal wonder developed by the World Health Organization (WHO) and UNICEF in the 1960s, and has ever since been preventing deaths from diarrhea dehydration. Despite the availability of cheap and effective oral rehydration salts, many children still die from diarrhea around the world. In fact, diarrhea still persists to be one of the leading causes of childhood death. The WHO (2000) .promotes the use of ORT to prevent diarrhea-related deaths and encourages the use of surveys in analyzing the setbacks in diarrhea case management through ORT. This paper identifies the factors underlying the use of oral rehydration salts (ORS) for diarrhea case management in the Philippines. The data used in the study is from the 2008 National Demographic and Household Survey. In a sample of 571 children, our study shows that: 1) rural caregivers are significantly less likely to use ORS as diarrhea case management for sick child; 2) children less than a year old are less likely to be provided with ORT compared to older children; 3) socioeconomic and demographic variables do not render significant effects on decision to use ORS.

Forecasting residential electricity demand in the Philippines using an error correction model
(2017-07) Santos, Angelo Gabrielle F.; Ducanes, Geoffrey M.
This study uses an Error Correction Model (ECM) to forecast residential electricity demand in the Philippines using household final consumption expenditure, residential electricity price, and temperature as explanatory variables. Results show that there is a long-run relationship between household final consumption expenditure and residential electricity demand. Estimates from the ECM are consistent with economic theory, and the model passed standard diagnostic and parameter stability tests. Forecast performance based on within-sample and out-of-sample forecasts of the ECM is also shown to be superior relative to a benchmark Autoregressive Distributed Lag model (ARDL). Simulations show that by 2040, residential electricity consumption will range from 42,500 GWh based on a weak income growth scenario and 61,942 GWh based on a combined changes scenario.
