A comprehensive study of the consumer behavior on the emerging ukay-ukay business in the Philippines
(2005-09) Concepcion, Ivy Lovelle L.; Garcia, Candice Marie Kathleen T.; Tecson, Gwendolyn R.
Filipinos are fond of buying products that have good quality and can be purchased at a low price. Big shopping malls, supermarkets, and department stores usually offer products with good quality, but they are usually expensive. The emergence of ukay-ukays in the 60's in Cebu and Baguio made it possible for the consumers to purchase products with good quality at a low price. Ukay- ukay shops are second-hand merchandise stores that offer a vast array of used products. They are imported from countries like China, Hongkong, and the United States. The researchers' awareness on the rampant emergence of ukay-ukay shops in Metro Manila induced them to look into the factors that affect the consumers' buying behavior in these shops. They were able to identify the reasons why consumers go to second-hand retailers. The general problem of this study is: How does the profile of consumers affect their 'buying behavior of second-hand goods? Specifically, this study sought answers to the following questions: 1. What is the profile of the ukay-ukay consumer (in terms of the following variables: age, gender, civil status, permanent residence, income (socio- economic status), educational attainment, and state of work)? 2. How does the consumer's profile affect the buying behavior in ukay-ukay shops? The researchers hypothesized that consumers aged 20-45 years old, female, married, college graduates, employed, with income below Php40,000, and permanent residents of Metro Manila are the frequent buyers in ukay-ukays. To check the certainty of the hypotheses, the descriptive normative survey method was used. The main instrument was the survey questionnaire which elicited the profile of the respondents and the effects of their priorities, lifestyle, trend, taste and preference, and accessibility of the ukay-ukay shops, to their buying behavior. The subjects of the study involved a survey of 500 buyers of ukay-ukay merchandise in five areas: Cubao, España, Kamuning, Marikina, and Pasay. To describe the profile of the respondents, regression analysis was utilized. Weighted mean and ranking were used for descriptive purposes to evaluate the qualitative factors that are influenced by consumers' profile. The data were analyzed using a five-point Likert scale with the following descriptive equivalent: Range of Mean Descriptive Scale Values Interpretation 5 4.50-5.00 Always 4 3.50-4.49 Often 3 2.50-3.49 Sometimes 2 1.50-2.49 Seldom 1 1.00-1.49 Never Findings revealed that most of the consumers of ukay-ukay items are aged 21-30 years old, female, permanent residents of Metro Manila, single, college graduate, fully-employed, and belong to income class B (Php20,001-40,000). The regression analysis showed that the older the consumers, the more highly educated and fully employed they are, and the more income they have, the higher the value of the items they buy at ukay-ukay shops. Age, permanent residence, civil status, highest educational attainment, state of work, and monthly income are positively related to the total value of the second-hand merchandise purchased. Moreover, the male consumers tend to buy at a higher value and so do those married, single-parent, and widowed consumers. Transportation cost and frequency of visit are both negatively related to the total value of second- hand goods purchased. Hence, the lower the transportation cost and the less frequent consumers go to ukay-ukay shops, the higher value the consumers tend to buy. Using the Likert scale, the researchers found out that lifestyle is the most predominant factor that affects the buying behavior of consumers. Next to it is the accessibility of the ukay-ukay shops. Taste and preferences, trend, and priorities respectively carne as third, fourth, and fifth factors that influence the consumers' buying behavior. Based on the findings and conclusions, the researchers proposed to legalize ukay-ukay business in the Philippines. They encouraged the owners and salespersons of second-hand merchandise to improve their service to attract more consumers. The findings that the researchers obtained would serve as helpful hints and pieces of advice to achieve a larger share of the market. Moreover, the researchers challenged the local distributors of brand new merchandise to improve their marketing mix strategies to be able to win back lost costumers. A study on other issues concerning the ukay-ukay business that has not been covered by the researchers was also recommended.

A model of crime in the Philippines: the effect of consumption and labor markets on crime
(2011-01) Anabo, David Joseph; Enriquez, Oliver Godfrey; Tecson, Gwendolyn R.
Property crime has recently been a heated topic in the realm of Social Sciences. Even in the field of Economics, many have tried to explain the occurrence of crime. Nevertheless, no one has been so bold to claim that he/she has successfully modeled property crime and its causes. This is because property crime cannot be generalized, with it differing from incident to incident, from region to region, and from country to country. This is why this paper conducts an inquiry on what drives people to commit property crime in the Philippines. That instead of a cross-country analysis of crime, it singles out a country so as to not make the assumption of homogeneity in the causes of crime across such distinct cultures and settings. This paper then will look at the economic factors and its effects on theft and robbery in the Philippines, with no comparison to neighboring countries. To be particular, this paper aims to find out whether rapid GOP growth the key to eradicating property crime from the country, whether personal consumption affects property crime, and whether the state of the labor market affect the incidence of theft and robbery. With the use of regional data, panel data methods, and economic theory, this paper delves into the realm of property crime in the Philippines, and look for the causes and roots of property crime.

A study on the contribution of roll-on/roll-off transport system (RORO) on inter-regional trade and regional industrialization
(2009-10) Cascolan, Yani May A.; Meru, Demetrio T. Jr.; Tecson, Gwendolyn R.
An efficient and adequate transportation system is an indispensable attribute of a strong economy. The Philippines, being an archipelago, requires an efficient water transportation in order to unite its islands and to achieve a nationally integrated. economy. The establishment of the Strong Republic Nautical Highway (SRNH) or the Roll-on Roll-off transportation scheme is one of the government's approach in achieving this end. The RoRo is intended to facilitate economic growth all over the country by improving accessibility and the efficient transfer of good and services. In this study, the impact of RoRo on regional trade and industrialization is carefully studied. The results suggest that regional trade is favorably affected by the increase in mobility through RoRo by facilitating efficient flow of raw materials and final goods. The impact of RoRo in industrialization is also favorable. The study confirmed that improved mobility through RoRo could improve the industry sector through the transport of input, i.e. physical capital primarily and labor, and the shipment of the output. Good transportation also widens the market base enabling the industry to have larger demand. This study also observed the trade off between the two sectors which matches the Neoclassical Two-Sector Growth Model. Finally, this study also concluded that good transportation is valuable to all sectors.

A study on the factors that affect the academic performance of economics students
(1995-01) Chavez, April Anne T.; Montenegro, Jose Carlito M.; Tecson, Gwendolyn R.
Studies have been made In the past regarding the factors that affect the academic behavior of Economics students. The EWA (or economics weighted average) is a major factor In determining the over-all academic performance of these students. Specifically, this research study revealed that the averages of Economics 101 & 102 and Economics 106 & 131 , average of other economics subjects, Math average, and the manner by which a student was placed Into this college (whether he was originally accepted into. the School of Economics or was a transferee from another college) are the significant variables to which the . EWA of a student Is sensitive. The higher the values for these factors, the more capable will be the student to obtain a high EWA. Adequate knowledge about these factors is needed in order for a student to be able to take certain measures to avoid getting a low EWA, because a low EWA may result to a student being on probation, thus leaving him open to the possibility of being involuntarily dismissed from the college.

Bull v. bears: an inter-country and inter-sector correlation and cointegration analyses of the Philippine stock exchange (2000-2010)
(2011-03) Go, John Reyneil U.; Li, Reginald Siegfrid O.; Tecson, Gwendolyn R.
In 2009, the PSE was left behind by emerging markets such as the Stock Exchange of Thailand and Shenzhen Stock Exchange. On On the other hand, PSE outperformed PSE outperformed both emerging and developed markets The 2010. The relationships that Philippine Stock Exchange Philippine Stock Exchange and major global indices are not fathomable by comparing stock returns alone; indeed, these relationships Therefore, both dynamic and complex. Therefore, this paper shall attempt to examine PSEi relationships that exist between Sector Indices (2008-2010) (2000-2010) and the PSE Sector Indices (2008-2010) with those of major global indices during market uptrends and market downtrends through correlation and cointegration analyses.

Cognitive achievement inequality of Filipino public elementary schoolchildren
    (2009-10) Capistrano, Monelle G.; Tecson, Gwendolyn R.
Are the publicly-schooled Filipino children learning? If so, learning what? Also, are there high disparities in cognitive achievement among these schoolchildren? The study tackles these questions by gauging average mastery levels and calculating Gini coefficients based on elementary achievement test scores in Math, Science, English, Filipino and HEKASI*. Decomposition analysis was applied to student sub-groupings by gender and geographic location. This was done to determine whether overall achievement inequality is explained by within-group inequality, that part of overall inequality explained by differences in ability among learners in individual subgroups or between-group inequality, which accounts for differences in average ability between subgroups. It was found that students learn Filipino and HEKASI best. Areas students are having problems with are Science, Math and English. Achievement inequality is low in all subjects and is not problematic. Improving learning outcomes as reflected by increasing achievement test scores is the real challenge. There is a robust correlation between average test scores and achievement inequality in all subjects. Hence, favorable changes in learning outcomes go hand in hand with decreases in achievement inequality, on the average. Within-region and within-province inequalities explain national and regional achievement inequalities respectively. Females slightly outperform males in all regions. There is greater achievement inequality among males than among females. Within-gender inequality accounts for regional achievement disparities. The relationship of cognitive achievement inequality with gross domestic regional product, income inequality, poverty incidence and poverty gap is weak.

    Devaluation: the Asian experience
    (1995-03) Novenario, Rosita-Frieda C. ; Tecson, Gwendolyn R.
This thesis looks at the experience of some Asian countries that have resorted to devaluation, namely: Thailand, Indonesia, and the Philippines. The significance of the difference of each countries' macroeconomic performance with the performance of their comparison group is tested. The trends in the consumer price index, gross domestic product, exports, imports, balance of trade, and balance of payments are determined. The desirability of devaluation as a stabilization ptilicy is concluded using the findings of Steven Kamin, an economist of the International Finance Division of the Federal Reserve Board, as measure. Kamin found that devaluation causes short run improvements in the balance of trade, and a long run improvement in the balance of payments, and a significant initial positive growth of exports. He also concluded the absence of marked inflation.
