Women and development: a time-series and cross-regional test of the u-curve hypothesis in the Philippines setting
(2005-10) Serrano, Moniera Crystle M.; Tria, Angeline CLeofe E.
In recent economic literature, economists have hypothesized a-U-curve relationship between female labor force participation and economic development. This paper provides time-series and cross-regional evidence on female labor force participation rates in the Philippines and considers its determinants. The measure of development used is per capita Gross Regional Domestic Product. A quadratic term in per capita Gross Regional Domestic Product is utilized in the models to empirically test the occurrence of aU-curve relationship. The models are estimated for fifteen regions across the years, 1993, 1994, 1995, 1996, 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001 and 2002. The results do not confirm the occurrence of a U-curve in the Philippine setting. This paper is adopted from a similar study done by researcher Aysit Tansel in 2002, using time-series, cross-provincial Turkey data in the years 1980, 1985 and 1990.
