Abstract
Using primary survey data on online micro entrepreneurs in the Philippines, the paper examines the incremental contribution of the Internet to entrepreneurship by identifying which types of individuals are enabled to pursue a business because of electronic retailing. The study finds that the technology has a gender empowerment effect: females are more likely to establish a business only if online selling is a feasible option. Similar results are obtained for new entrepreneurs and individuals who have received post-tertiary education.
