Analysis of household expenditures and its implications to nutrition: a case study for Metro Manila
Thesis
The incidence of malnutrition is growing in urban centers. Rapid population growth in the cities brought about by the uncontrolled movement of people from the rural to the urban centers pushes the cities to their limits. The urban poor is more likely to be worse off in terms of household food security, environmental condition, and nutritional status than the rural poor. The direct relations of income and food and nutrient consumption are established although the percentage increases as estimated by the expenditure elasticities are quite low implying that substantial increases in income are required to reach the desirable level of consumption. Urban households are also constrained by competing non-food needs and thus, they make more difficult decisions regarding food and non-food consumption. Food, fuel and toiletries were considered necessities in the urban areas. Allocation for these goods are predicted to decline when income increases. Malnutrition is a direct consequence of underdevelopment, hence, it can only be eradicated through sustained economic growth. Until such time, the need for stop-gap measures is underscored. Information on the consumption behavior and nutritional status of urban households can be used as basis for effective nutrition intervention programs.
