The main objective of the paper is to quantify female labour supply in the agricultural sector in Bangladesh and in the process identify the factors that affect the participation of women in the agricultural labour force. Before estimating the female labour supply functions in agriculture this paper provides an overview of the existing socioeconomic status of women in Bangladesh and highlights trends of women participation in the labour force with special reference to the agricultural sector. The study also compares the empirical results of this study to similar other studies in the Philippines. The study reveals that before the Bangladeshi women were mostly confined to their houses specially in the rural areas due to the strict "Purdah system" (seclusion from men) and their social values. Now-a-days poverty, higher rate of literacy, exposure to western culture have challenged the "purdah system" and resulting to higher participation of women in economic activities. Though the overall participation rate of women in economic activities has increased over the past years, the participation rate in agriculture has decreased.
