This study tries to estimate wage differentials by occupation groups. It attempts to quantify the influence of various determinants of occupational wage differentials within a human capital framework. The model used in this study considers earnings differentials across occupations to be due to differences in schooling or in investments in human capital. The study takes schooling as proxy for productivity. The effects of factors other than schooling, such as gender and location are also controlled and accounted for. Both ordinary least squares (OLS) and weighted least squares (WLS) approaches are used in estimating regression coefficients. Both OLS and WLS regression results show that a significantly high percentage of variations in earnings are explained by the different occupation groups. The coefficient of determination increases when the time factor is taken into account. In the analyses of earnings differentials, professionals and administrative workers are found to earn at a significantly higher rates than services workers. Also, clerical workers earn more than services workers. Agricultural workers, however, earn less than services workers. The earnings differentials found are attributed to differences in the mean schooling years. OLS and WLS regression estimates show that earnings across occupational classifications are significantly affected by schooling or investments in human capital. With the inclusion of other factors like percentage of female, percentage of urban workers and time element, there is an observed decrease in the rate of return to schooling both using OLS and WLS approaches.
