Item Restricted Income inequality: does it influence the propensity and propinquity to commit robbery and theft? (evidence from cross-regional data)(2005-01) Abarientos, Ma. Theresa M.; Aggari, Lara PerpetuaThis study is geared toward a better understanding of the factors that might contribute to the growing number of crimes committed in the country. There have been studies conducted related to this particular area but still there are areas left undone. The paper analyzes the significance of income inequality using the GINI coefficient index, in determining crime rate. In this paper, the researchers also attempt to provide a more intensive study concerning crime rate using cross-regional data on crime and other data. First, we probe into the link between income inequality and crime rate across regions in the country by looking into the correlation between the Gini coefficient and the crime rate as determined by the number of reported crimes divided by the population. We then further investigate the connection between the two by taking into account other determinants like urbanization rate, GRDP, literacy rate, unemployment rate, population density and percentage of young males. Lastly, we examine if the result of Ehrlich's study holds true regarding the effect of income inequality on crimes against property and crimes vs. people by looking into their correlation through regression. We are using the 2000 data because of better breakdown of reported index crimes. Moreover Gini coefficient is only available every three years including 2000.
