Item Restricted The role of citizen in economic resilience: insights from the COVID-19 crisis(2024-01) Arago, Patricia Isabel G.; Sangrador, Julia Samantha C.; Jandoc, Karl Robert L.Existing literature on economic resilience has focused on the significance of state institutions and initial macroeconomic conditions. Overlooked, however, is the possible role of citizen cooperation. This is especially relevant in the context of a crisis like the COVID-19 pandemic, where non-pharmaceutical interventions (NPIs) were mandated to mitigate the virus and were only effective to the extent they were followed. The study tested whether citizen cooperation matters by analyzing a cross-section of 148 countries using OLS and finding the affirmative: controlling for initial conditions such as the national capacity and susceptibility to shocks, citizen cooperation is negatively correlated with the extent of a country’s economic loss. The implication is that a country’s preparedness to shocks should also include attention to strategies that amplify citizen cooperation to state mandates.
