Item Restricted In-patient utilization in public and private hospitals in Metro Manila: a case study(2010-03) Atanacio, Anna Patricia S.; Tangco, Camia G.; Clarete, RamonHospitals, being major health care providers, are crucial to a country's development. With the rapid propagation of illnesses and disease comes the increase in demand for health care, particularly in-patient hospital services. The purpose of this research is to examine possible factors that may affect in-patient hospital utilization as expressed by the number of admissions, as well as to observe the different trends of patient usage in both private and public hospitals. The hospital variables are good indicators of the disparity in hospital quality. The research is designed to be a case study, focusing on five random private tertiary hospitals and five random public tertiary hospitals in the NCR using their recent data, from the years 2006-2008. To study the effects of the hospital variables on in-patient utilization, the researchers apply quantitative and graphical tools. Chi-Squared Test for Independence for Ordinal Data is performed to determine associations between hospital variables, to support and supplement qualitative analysis. To compare variable behavior between the private and public hospitals, quantile-quantile plots and side-by-side box plots are utilized. The study finds an association between in-patient admissions & bed capacity, in-patient admissions & average length of stay, bed capacity & average length of stay, in-patient admissions & number of deaths, and in-patient admissions & number of medical staff, in the public and the private hospitals. The comparative methods exhibit trends of larger in-patient utilization in public hospitals, and trends of higher service quality - as expressed in higher number of physicians, and in lower deaths, mortality rates, and average length of stay - in private hospitals.
