Item Restricted The sunshine industry: Philippine contract centers as a trade phenomenon(2003-04) Aguinaldo, Ma. Estrellita SarmientoThis paper explains the Philippines' participation in the global outsourcing trade for contact center services using the Heckscher-Ohlin framework. In tests of factor-endowment, the country consistently emerged as strongly labor-abundant. Its cheap labor costs produced a competitive export price for the service, driving the country into the trade. Although factor-price equalization was not found forthcoming, tendency towards it produced the higher-than- average returns for Philippine labor employed in the trade. The country stands to gain significantly from the contact center trade, as it opens up several opportunities. Its comparative advantage by labor endowment, however, may be vulnerable to shifting comparative advantages and unpredictably changing market conditions. Development of key competencies, strengthened linkages, and dynamic government focus are recommended.Item Restricted Preferences, aspirations and spending: are call center employees myopic?(2004-04-05) Barrios, Meghann Margotte L.; Patawaran, Leander Paul A.; Esguerra, EmmanuelThis thesis aims to determine whether workers' preferences, aspirations and spending profiles may be used as measures of their time-preference. To achieve this, we used customer support representatives as models of present- oriented workers because of their decision to work in this line of job despite the slow career advancement opportunities it offers and the alienating nature of the work itself. Once this assumption was made clear, we attempted to test whether these individuals who opt to work in a call center show corresponding life choices that are linked with present-orientedness, or at the very least, exhibit characteristics that show a greater degree of present-orientedness than workers employed in other industries. Data were generated though distribution of surveys to 2 groups, which are customer support representatives and workers in other industries. The results were then analyzed through logistic regression analysis. This thesis was able to establish the fact that time preference orientations of workers may be highly correlated with certain life choices and decisions made by workers. It has aptly shown the significance of certain factors linked with a person's preference over the present or the future. The indicators that proved to be significant are the following: duration of the job search, reasons for occupational choice, investments in education, inclined interest for leisure and smoking.Item Restricted Wages and the asian business process outsourcing industry(2009-03) Capacia, Karen Eloisa B.; Morales, Cristina Victoria N.This paper measures the magnitudes of the determinants of wage rates in the Asian business process outsourcing (BPO) sector. It examines the effects of infrastructure, cost of living, and labor supply on the wages of the software developers in China, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Korea, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Taiwan. Using a panel data, we examine and conduct a multi-linear regression analysis on the determinants of the different wages of BPO providers. We find that technological Infrastructure has the biggest impact (positive) on wages, followed by labor supply (negative). Cost of living has the least impact (positive) on wages.
