For our part, we condense these accounts and illustrate the crisis with an innovative technique. A game theoretic approach is applied in this study, with national government and financial institutions as players, using historical data for payoff computations. In the process, we model bounded rationality in the selection of players' tools among an array of variables. We follow the players' decisions through a six year period, 1995 to 2000, which enables us to track the variation in economic activity and motivation for the region. This game modeling, we believe, initiates a fresh method of analyzing and explaining how the crisis came to be, with respect to actual data and regional environment.Item Restricted Does commercialization of microfinance institutions result in wider outreach?(2007-04-04) Sadongdong, Adrian B.; Vital, Marianne Joy A.; Pernia, Ernesto M.This study addresses the question: does the transformation of a microfinance NGO into a commercialized financial institution affect positively its sustainability and, more importantly, its outreach? Using data taken from the financial statements of the four large-scale microfinance NGOs in the Philippines, we find that transformation effectively increases the sustainability of the NGOs through more cost-effective operations, thus greater capacity to serve poor clients (borrowers). This seems evident by comparing the performance of transformed NGOs vis-a-vis the untransformed ones. Regression analyses substantiate the positive aspects of sustainability and capacity for broader outreach. However, transformation by itself is not a guarantee for maximum outreach to the poor.
