M.; Pernia, ErnestoThis paper studies inorganic fertilizers and land productivity during the period 1998- 2003 using regional data on yield, inorganic fertilizers, infrastructure (irrigation and electrification), labor inputs, and modern seed varieties. The focus is on cereals, namely, rice and com. Regression results for rice show that inorganic fertilizers cum irrigation, labor, and modern seed varieties are significant determinants of yield. On the other hand, inorganic fertilizers cum electrification and labor inputs are significant in explaining com yield. The results suggest that application of inorganic fertilizers needs to be accompanied by improvements in irrigation and electrification. However, given the positive relationship of oil and inorganic fertilizer prices, the application of organic fertilizers may be a better option. Organic fertilizers are not only less costly, but they are also better in preserving soil quality. Further, farmers should have access to modern varieties of rice and com for higher yields.
