Item Restricted Should universities introduce a policy selected automatic admission? the case of the University of the Philippines(2014-12) Kyeong, Minjeong; Horioka, Charles Yuji; Quimbo, Stella Luz A.This paper analyzes the relationship between Generalized Weighted Average (GWA) and automatic admission in University of the Philippines Diliman (UPD) of more than 30,000 undergraduates in UPD from 2007 to 2013. Automatic admission is significantly and negatively related to GWA. Students who were selected through automatic admission - foreign students, and Filipino students who attended foreign schools or local schools with International Baccalaureate programs - tend to perform worse in academics than students who were admitted through the UP College Admission Test. Therefore, I recommend administrators in UPD to review and possibly consider resetting the required minimum scores for three examinations in automatic admission.Item Restricted The UP Diliman student population from admission to enrollment(2011-10) dela Cruz, Fatima Marie D.; Mangahas, Alanna Margarita F.; Tan, Edita A.The Program Development Staff of the Office of the President of the University, in a July 1976 Faculty Conference, approved the resolution: "That the University adopt and implement immediately a democratic admission policy to make its studentry more representative of the nation's population." The University resolved for a more democratized admission policy - admitting more students from lower socio-economic to one which better approximates the distribution of the Philippine population. The study looks into whether or not enrollment in the University reflects this. The socioeconomic background, residential location, and type of high school are found to influence the chance of passing the admission criteria of the University. Admission is based on weighted average scores - admissions test and average high school grades. An analysis of these variables is undertaken. The University also provides tuition subsidy based on family income and wealth under the Socialized Tuition and Financial Assistance Program. Trend analyses will be undertaken to see patterns that have emerged since the 2007 revision of the STF AP. Regression analysis will be used in order to identify the effects of different academic and socioeconomic variables on the probability of qualifying for UP Diliman. An applicant from a family that earns more than Pl.O million annually, from a UP-administered high school, from NCR, and has high high school grades has the highest chance of qualifying.
