Item Restricted Some economic issues in the fishing industry development: a Philippine case(1984-01) Cecilio, Criselda F.; Ayuyao, FranciscoThe fisheries industry is a basic economic activity in this nation of 7,000 islands. The livelihood of a great number of people, especially in the coastal areas, depends on it. It is a vital area of concern in present economic development plans of the government. As such, we felt that an industrial study of this sector of agro-industry in the country will have some value. Where fish is a staple in the national diet, we still find large areas where people cannot eat fish because either the supply is deficient or the prices are high. This prompted us to direct our study towards investigating the problem of the supply and demand gap, considering the number of people, the fisheries industry services. By identifying the causes of the supply-demand gap, we hope to make suggestions especially to the policy-maker in the government, with regards to the fisheries industry. Secondary sources were used to obtain data on the three sectors of the industry viz, the commercial, municipal, and in land fisheries (fishponds/pens). An important finding of this study reveals that some problems that cause the gap in supply and demand in the industry are due to the existing government policies which are highly export oriented.
