Item Restricted The determinnats of life expectancy in Asia(2016-05) Fernandez, Jena Veronica Fernandez ; Sta Maria, Melissa Florence Sy ; Magno, Cielo D.Health is a key indicator in the growth and development of countries. In measuring health, life expectancy rates have been used as a primary tool in analyzing and comparing the overall well-being of individuals among different countries. This study analyzes the different economic, social, and environmental determinants that may have an impact on the life expectancy of people in Asian countries. The Grossman theoretical model uses these determinants to assess the level of demand for health in the region. The variables included in this study were health expenditure, gross domestic product per capita, unemployment rate, food production index, urban population, and total number of people affected by natural disasters. The results obtained from the fixed model regressions indicate that economic variables contributed most significantly in influencing the life expectancy in Asia. The conclusions suggest that life expectancies could be increased through focusing on economic policies implemented by the government.Item Restricted The determinants of household educational expenditures in the Philippines(2016-06) Mejia, Carlos John A.; Sy, Anthony Adam V.; Mendoza, Maria Nimfa F.In this study, the determinants of household educational expenditures in the Philippines are analyzed. The factors considered include permanent income (proxied by total expenditures), household characteristics and government transfers. A Tobit model is used and the results show that the significant determinants include permanent income, regional location, government transfers, the number of preschool, highschool and elementary aged children, as well as the age, gender, and civil status of the household head. The results suggest that programs such as the 4Ps, that combine cash transfers with family development sessions, should be continued and expanded. These programs should be targeted towards vulnerable households, which are those with low incomes, a higher number of children, single and young heads, and those located in Regions 1,7 and NCR. Furthermore, educational programs on family planning and responsible parenting should be provided to the youth, to ensure that they would become responsible parents that provide educational opportunities to their children.Item Restricted Income determinants of the development banking system(1981-03-13) Alvarez, Joseny V.; Antonio, Grace B.; Canlas, DanteItem Restricted Factors associated with domestic tourism in the Philippines(2012-04) Nogaliza, Janel D.; Trajano, Christine Mae N.; Pernia, Ernesto M.Tourism plays a vital role in the economy as exhibited by other countries. In addition to bringing in more investments and tourism receipts to the local economy, tourism boosts employment opportunities. It is important to identify the various determinants of tourist arrivals to help promote the tourism industry. Through pooled cross-section and time series (200 1 - 201 0) on the 14 regions of the Philippines (except NCR and ARMM), our results show tourist arrivals' responsiveness to certain factors. In this paper, we aim to examine the effects of such factors on tourist arrivals per region over the indicated 1 0-year period. We also try to draw implications for policy that would give a boost to domestic tourism that benefits the local economy. Using random effects panel-data analysis, a comprehensive examination of the results will be presented confirming the robust relationship of the number of domestic tourist arrivals to four of the explanatory variables that consistently appear to be significant in the regressions. These explanatory variables are relative prices, gross domestic regional product, population density, and land area.Item Restricted Vulnerability to poverty: who are the poor of the future?(2011-04) Chua, Kenn Garry L.; Go, Laurence Anthony L.; Tecson, Gwendolyn R.Existing poverty reduction policies are criticized for targeting the poor of today, instead of those who might be poor tomorrow. Studies on vulnerability gained popularity as a result of the significant role of risk and its interplay with poverty. Emphasizing the dynamic nature of poverty, the paper provides a new index for vulnerability and discusses important determinants of this vulnerability. As the first Philippine research to discuss vulnerability and propose an original measure, the study also pioneers the use of a longitudinal data through the merged APIS of 2004, 2007 and 2008. While current measures of vulnerability exist in the literature, the researchers modified the methodology used for poverty status [Reyes 2002a] and applied it to their study of vulnerability. A multinomial logistic regression was employed to yield the determinants affecting household vulnerability. Echoing studies on poverty, variables such as household head characteristics, urbanity, housing quality, asset ownership and income from abroad were identified as the model's regress. Furthermore, factors external to the household were regressed including macroeconomic indicators and weather variables. Results replicate those of existing studies - that vulnerability is greatest for households whose heads are uneducated, those located in rural settings with poor housing quality. In addition, vulnerable households are characterized by low employment ratios, limited income sources (whether domestic or abroad) and inadequate asset ownership. Ultimately, macro- level variables play a significant role in our analysis, with inflation, rainfall and typhoons greatly influencing a household's vulnerability level.Item Restricted The interbank call loan rate and its determinants(1981-04-10) Arias, Geraldine D.; de Guzman, Dolores A.Item Restricted Socio-economic determinants of health(1982-01) Lugue, Francisco; Mijares, John; Fabella, RaulItem Restricted Determinants of export growth: the case of garments(1982-10-07) Sanchez, Jocelyn Ignacio; Jurado, GonzaloItem Restricted Item Restricted The determinands of foreign visitor arrivals in the Philippines: a comparative analysis of the Japanese and U.S. groups(1982-01) De Villa, Stella Marie C.
