An alternative to measuring maternal mortality in the Philippines: the sex differentials on adult mortality method
(2003-04) Dowling, Ma. Camille A.; Yumul, Ily Grace T.; Alburo, Florian
The health-development relationship goes both ways. Specifically, economic development tends to improve health status, while better health contributes to the country's economic development. In the particular aspect of maternal health, the level of maternal mortality is one of the most important measures of a nation's human and social development. In the face of growing concern on maternal health, information on the level of maternal mortality remains fragmentary particularly in developing countries where 99% of these deaths occur. In the Philippines, the sisterhood method has been used to measure the level of maternal mortality wherein a respondent is asked regarding the survival status of her sisters and for deceased sisters when the death was maternity-related. However, the level of maternal mortality estimated using the sisterhood method reflects great disparity because of the large sampling errors associated with the estimate. This study begins by presenting estimates implied by the sisterhood method. Then, using the Sex Differentials in Adult Mortality method, it portrays a possible alternative of determining the level of maternal mortality in the Philippines.

The effects of teenage pregnancy on neonatal mortality
(2010-10) Ame, Maria Angela Kristina Ilagan; Go, Carlo Miguel Romeo Sison; Desierto, Desiree
This paper aims to answer how adolescent fertility affects neonatal mortality. Previous researches have seen trends where adolescent mothers are less conscientious when it comes to taking care of their children. In line with past literature, the hypothesis presented in this research states that adolescent fertility brings about poorer health to their children. Most studies on this topic are conducted abroad. Adolescent fertility researches on countries like Brazil, Colombia and the Caribbean have been studied by different researchers. This paper would, however, concentrate on the local scene and condition using the Philippine DHS data. With the available figures, this study will use Logistic Regression (Logit) regression on cross sectional data and shall control for factors such as poverty and level of maternal education since it might affect how adolescent mothers take care of their children. The researchers have found that teenage mothers have a higher chance of losing their child during or after their pregnancy.
