Total capital stock estimation and the contribution of the capital structure to total factor productivity
(2003-04) Laurel, Benedict Eloha R.; Rances, Katherine May N.
This study focuses on total capital stock estimation and the contribution of the capital structure of the Philippine economy to total factor productivity (TFP). The framework employed by Aurora Sanchez two decades ago, is the same framework utilized in the first part of this study in order to come up with capital stock estimates for the period 1981 to 2000. The computed estimates were then used in the second part of this study for the evaluation of the contribution of the capital structure to total factor productivity. The proponents of this study believe in the indispensable role of capital to the growth and development of the economy; however; studies, including this one, have shown the failure of our country, over the years, to foster enhanced productivity within the economy. Some of the determinants of the resulting impact of capital to TFP are then presented in this paper in order to suggest improvements in the current policies being implemented.

The effects of productivity on wages in the manufacturing sector, Philippines: a pooled data analysis
(2004-10) Villegas, Jamie Ann M.; Tecson, Gwendolyn R.
The paper examines the effects of productivity on wages in the Philippine manufacturing industry from 1982 to 1998, engaging in a regional study. Working on a pooled data analysis, the study makes use of regression models having 2 dependent variables, nominal and real salaries and wages, respectively. Independent variables consist of Real Labor Productivity, Consumer Price Index, and Unemployment Level. Results of the study show that labor productivity has a strong relationship with salaries and wages. To the extent that a relationship between productivity and wage can be presented, this will support that productivity is a significant factor considered in wage determination. Thus, the relationship will help policy makers in making plans and formulating strategies to effectively promote productivity improvements that will contribute to the increase in real purchasing power and economic growth.

Productivity as a measure of the degree of export-orientation of micro enterprises
(2006-10-20) Pelayo, Angela Elaine; Vargas, Tomas Enrico; Tecson, Gwendolyn
Micro enterprises play a vital role in the economy but its contributions are generally understated and hardly realized. This study aims to measure export orientation and labor productivity and the relationship between the two stated variables in micro enterprises in the manufacturing sector. Labor productivity is isolated in order to determine its effect on micro enterprises, capacity to export. Several factors supported by related literature are given representation to serve as control variables. The cross section analysis of the data shows that labor productivity is not a major determinant of export orientation. Its coefficient is significant but negative. Although contrary to the hypothesis, this may be interpreted that the current level of productivity is insufficient to allow export of products made by the manufacturing industries. The micro enterprises in the manufacturing industry are productive but not yet to the extent that enables them to competitively participate in foreign markets.
