    The economic cost of the excess supply of jeepneys in Metro Manila

    The urban population of Metro Manila continues to grow every year. With this comes the increase in the demand for public transportation which is filled up by numerous road and rail-based transportations. However, the supply of public utility vehicles, particularly jeepneys, exceeded the demand. Due to this market inefficiency, large amount of costs are experienced by jeepney drivers, passengers and the society. The study estimates these costs and analyzes the problems associated with the transport system of Metro Manila. Numerous methods applied in previous studies were used to determine the various costs such as revenue loss, increase in fixed costs, cost of wasted fuel, man-hour loss and costs of premature death and morbidity. It was determined that the economic cost of the excess supply of jeepney units amounted to over PhP 150 billion, which is roughly 2.25% of the Philippine GDP in 2007.

    Welfare and employment security: the case of PUJ and AUV drivers

    The emergence of the public utility jeepney (PUJ) and Asian utility vehicle (AUV) sectors in urban and urbanizing areas in the Philippines has responded to the commuters' need for readily available, inexpensive, accessible, and almost door-to-door public transport service. The boundary system evolved as a solution to uncertainty problems surrounding the PUJ and AUV sectors such as asymmetric information, adverse selection, moral hazard and principal-agent problem. It also serves as a form of employment security for the driver-renters. Using the ordinary least squares regression method, variables, denoting work effort, have significant positive effects on the driver's welfare. The dependency ratio, driver type and vehicle ownership status also have significant effects. The other variables hypothesized to affect the welfare of the driver did not turn out as significant.
