    Solid waste management: an analysis of the trash situation in Metro Manila

    The fast rising volume of garbage generated in the Philippines' capital has become a serious environmental and health hazard. To gain a better understanding of this issue, this study analyzes the current solid waste management (SWM) situation in Metro Manila (MM) by identifying factors that affect the amount of solid wastes. Our results show that rapid population growth appears to be a main factor behind garbage volume growth in the metropolis. Visitor arrivals (tourism) is a significant factor as well. The results further show a negative relationship between garbage volume and the ratio of gross regional domestic product (GRDP) of MM to national gross domestic product (GDP), suggesting that economic growth reduces the trash problem as the capacity to deal with the problem improves. Garbage volume appears to be negatively related to poverty and positively related to average consumption expenditures. Other factors such as' the garbage crisis and the implementation by the Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA) of their trash mitigation programs seem to contribute to the increase and decrease of waste, respectively.

    Possible effects of user charges in solid waste management: a case study

    This study aims to determine the feasibility of imposing garbage fees on two communities, Barangay Escopa 3 and Marilag, both in District 3 of Quezon City. The residents of Escopa belong to low income brackets while those in Marilag are generally considered of the middle class. This study construed that the demand curve of Marilag is less elastic than that of Escopa. Using demand and supply equations, it was also found out that the price the residents of Marilag are willing to pay for seven trips each week exceeds the needed finances for the same number of trips in both barangays. The excess can be used to fund the other auxiliary activities of a comprehensive solid waste management program.

    Solid waste management in the Philippines: socioeconomic factor effects on household waste disposal behavior

    A fractional multinomial logistic model is used to estimate the relationships between socioeconomic factors of provincial local government units and its households to the waste disposal and diversion methods that households engage in. Using 2000 Census data, the econometric analysis indicates that LGU taxation as a portion of household income and female proportion to total population have positive significant effects on the use of garbage pickup services. LGU expenditure on the other hand was seen to have positive effects on the likelihood that recommended practices like composting will be used. Surprisingly, discouraged waste disposal methods like burning, dumping, or burying garbage were seen to be more likely when there is higher agricultural employment and hence less urbanity. These findings suggest a shift of proper disposal campaigns, targeting female groups more and the rural population as well Findings also support a policy of per-use or per-bag tax rather than a general tax.

    Ecological solid waste management act (RA 9003) at the university of the Philippine Diliman, school of economics: waste segregation attitudes and behavior

    This study seeks to determine the key factors that affect the probability that students in the UP School of Economics (UPSE) segregate their trash. Based on RA 9003, institutions such as universities are required to actively promote this type of recycling behavior. Waste segregation is one way by which college campuses can contribute to decreasing their solid waste streams, thereby reducing overall trash disposed. After conducting a two-day waste audit of Jose Encarnacion Hall, it was found that the most common types of recyclables thrown-out by students include PET bottles, aluminum, pyrostyrene, and plastic. The trash receptacles that are most used by students are those found outside the tambayans and classrooms. Through probit regression and the interpretation of survey data, we identified significant factors that positively influence segregation behavior. These include the use of signage, color-coding, increasing available information, and providing accessibility and convenience to students. From this data, a framework for a segregation program for the Academic Year 2010 to 2011 in the UPSE was proposed. Funding and leadership of the initiative was found to be effective through the UP School of Economics Student Council. Moreover, the benefits of such a program greatly outweigh the costs of additional segregation infrastructure such as bins and the like. These benefits include the monetary value received from the resale of recyclable items and the time saved from engaging in manual segregation. The program would involve all the key stakeholders- students, faculty, administration, and staff. Performance measures and other standard procedures and guidelines will also be developed to ensure sustainability of the program.
