| dc.description.abstract | The total fertility rate of the Philippines is declining and its continuous fall could result in the demise of the country. Moreover, when control of fertility is lost, there could be consequences for economic growth and development. This paper aims to study the determinants of fertility in the Philippines with emphasis on the fertility differences across the National Capital Region (NCR) and the major island groups in the country. From the 2008 National Demographic and Health Survey data, it is seen that age, highest educational level attained, wealth, current marital status, fertility preference, type of residence, and religion are significant determinants of fertility. However, knowledge on family planning and health were found insignificant for the majority. Also, the significance of knowledge on family planning varied depending on the highest educational level attained and wealth. There was not much variation in fertility rates across regions, even if there is a wide array of regions in the country. It is suggested that the government provide policies concerning population control and growth. As such, a sustainable fertility rate will positively affect population and economic development, in the long run. | |
