| dc.description.abstract | In practice, school quality has been used as a proficient measure of the capabilities of a fresh graduate. Varied researches show that it is also one of the key factors for assessment of job applicants in the recruitment processes of some companies. In assessing the relative competency of graduates from the University of the Philippines in the corporate world, this study has intended to investigate the significance of school reputation, as a measure of school quality, in the initial income of fresh graduates. It further aims to estimate the relative significance of grades, extracurricular activities, and internship experiences on the wage differentials of fresh graduates from different schools. The researchers used primary data from surveys and interviews with employed Economics and Business Management majors who graduated within the years 2003-2007. To estimate the significance of school reputation, the research has utilized Card and Kreuger's (1996) theoretical model of school quality, education, and earnings in the derivation of the study's empirical model. Results of the study has shown that income premiums are given to graduates of the top universities despite having the same credentials as other applicants (GWA, course and leadership experience). Moreover, graduates of the University of the Philippines are still given higher annual income as compared to graduates of other reputable universities. In addition, wage differentials can also be explained by grades and extracurricular activities. Internship experience, however, remains insignificant in determining income. Nevertheless, recruitment officers, interviewed for the purpose of the study, still consider internship experience as a significant advantage of job applicants. | |
