From pump to plug: a preliminary exploratory analysis of the association between electric vehicle adoption and gasoline prices

| dc.description.abstract | The growing global electric vehicle (EV) market is an opportunity for the Philippines and its consumers to transition towards a more sustainable fuel source, however the country currently faces barriers hindering its rate of adoption of electric vehicles. This preliminary study focuses on identifying whether rising gasoline prices are associated in predicting the rate of adoption of EVs through a two-way fixed effects semi-log panel regression framework, controlling for effects per region and year. The findings show that the change in gasoline prices by itself is not enough to explain the rate of EV adoption in the Philippines, contrasting with global studies on EV adoption and survey-based studies on consumer preferences in the Philippines. This is likely due to unobserved factors influencing consumer decisions to purchase electric vehicles alongside the emergent state of the market in the country. | |
