Solid waste management: an analysis of the trash situation in Metro Manila

| dc.description.abstract | The fast rising volume of garbage generated in the Philippines' capital has become a serious environmental and health hazard. To gain a better understanding of this issue, this study analyzes the current solid waste management (SWM) situation in Metro Manila (MM) by identifying factors that affect the amount of solid wastes. Our results show that rapid population growth appears to be a main factor behind garbage volume growth in the metropolis. Visitor arrivals (tourism) is a significant factor as well. The results further show a negative relationship between garbage volume and the ratio of gross regional domestic product (GRDP) of MM to national gross domestic product (GDP), suggesting that economic growth reduces the trash problem as the capacity to deal with the problem improves. Garbage volume appears to be negatively related to poverty and positively related to average consumption expenditures. Other factors such as' the garbage crisis and the implementation by the Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA) of their trash mitigation programs seem to contribute to the increase and decrease of waste, respectively. | |
