Abstract
Liberalization of the telecommunication industry which resulted to a too crowded sector, accompanied by adverse effects of the Asian crisis, have been setting merger as a trend in the telecommunication industry. Telecom firms that already merged and those that are contemplating to do so have various financial and economic reasons for engaging in such activity. To be able to get a good over view as to why telecom companies choose to merge or not, major joint-venture deals within the sector have been studied and analyzed. Costs and benefits attached to merger are also examined. Since the probable success of a desirable merger pushing through can be explicitly and implicitly influenced by the government through its policies and regulations, the role of the government has been likewise assessed.
