Abstract
This study aims to investigate the correlation of committing a property crime and more
severe crimes with respect to individual characteristics, social characteristics of the
district and the barangay, and quality of police and judiciary enforcement. More
specifically, it explores the effect of the following variables: age, sex, educational
attainment, employment status, as well as district and barangay characteristics
(population, crime rate and solution rate, business and real property tax collections). The
data focuses on offenders from Quezon City from December 2015 to September 2016
obtained from the Quezon City Police District, the Philippine Statistics Authority and the
Quezon City Hall (Barangay Operations Center and Financial Management Unit). The
Logit Model, a binary regressand model, along with Probit and Linear Probability Models
were adopted. The study hopes to contribute towards a better understanding of how the
social and economic background of the individual affects the perceived costs and benefits
of the crime, violent or property, to be committed by the individual that may aid in the
assessment of the goals and methods of the Philippine government in its pursuit of crime
reduction.
