Abstract
This study aims to determine the effect of some demographic factors, such as income, household size, education of meal planner, occupation of household head and location of residence (rural and urban) on consumption of some selected food items, namely; rice and rice products; sugars and syrups; fats and oils; fish, meat, poultry, eggs, milk and milk products; dried beans, nuts and seeds; Vit. C-rich foods, green, leafy and yellow vegetables; other fruits and vegetables; and coffee and alcoholic beverages. The analysis centered on the two food consumption surveys of the FNRI done in 1978 and 1982. First, the 1982 food consumption survey was analyzed by getting the per capita percentage consumption of each food items. Then, the two surveys were compared to determine the changes in food consumption leve1s.
The study reveals that the Filipino's diet is mainly composed of cereals, fish and vegetables. These food items constitute the largest share of percentage consumption of all food items. This trend does not change for all the demographic factors concerned.
