Number of children and its effect on the education spending of a Filipino household

Abstract
One way to achieve economic growth is by investing in human capital. However, the presence of large number of children can prohibit this investment and cause a poor household to stay or to fall into the poverty trap. This paper examines the relationship between educational spending and the number of school-age children in a Philippine household using the 2004 APIS data. The econometric model used was based on the fertility-education trade-off model. Results suggest that there is a negative and significant effect of the number of children to the per-child spending on education. This confirms the fertility and education trade-off established in the literature. The endogeneity of the number of children in the equation was also considered in the model. Other determinants of education spending such as household head characteristics and household income were also included in the model.
