An economic analysis on the effect of pull factors on inbound tourism in the Philippines

Abstract
In 2007, the Philippines recently reached an all-time high of 3.1 million tourist arrivals. Despite this achievement, the tourism performance of the Philippines pales in comparison with its South- East Asian neighbors like Malaysia and Thailand which in the same year generated 20.97 and 14.8 million tourist arrivals, respectively. This paper examines supply-side or pull factors that influence tourist arrivals in the Philippines using two-stage least squares (2SLS). This study also attempts to forecast tourist arrivals in the coming years through simulation analysis. Political stability, public safety, infrastructures and overall economic health substantially affect tourist arrivals at various levels. However, average tourist receipts and tourism budget are insignificant. The sensitivity analysis suggests that investments in infrastructures should be given priority along with maintaining a strong currency which reflects political stability.
