dc.description.abstract | The Nature versus Nurture debate remains controversial in different fields of study. This paper focuses on the impact of these nature and nurture variables on the academic performance of 687 college students across seven universities in Metro Manila. The dependent variable used is the average grade of the student, while the main independent variables are their parents' educational attainment. The researchers also used control variables such as the student's acquired characteristics, during his stay in school. Using an OLS regression, results showed that neither nature nor nurture had a significant impact on the student's academic performance. It also confirmed the researchers' hypothesis, that the mother's educational attainment largely affected the student's cognitive skills. However, the father's educational attainment remained insignificant in the model. It is also interesting to note that control variables, choice of university and course, also has a big impact the student's academic performance. The quality of education in the Philippines remains inferior to its counterparts in Southeast Asia, and one of the policies the government has recently passed is the K to 12 program. Results of this study confirm the relevance of the policy and recommend more programs addressed to women's education. However, this paper remains limited by its sample size, scope, and other unmaintained variables such as parental involvement. | |
