dc.description.abstractThe paper investigates whether temperature and precipitation have a significant effect on household cooking fuel choice. Households may change their cooking fuel choice depending on their external environment. Using the Household Energy Consumption Survey (HECS) 2011 data, Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) precipitation data, and temperature data from World Weather Online, the paper finds that the effects of temperature and precipitation are more significant on more sophisticated fuel types. Estimated marginal effects from the probit models show that electricity is most likely to be used for cooking in areas with warmer temperature and lower precipitation. Liquid fuels such as kerosene and LPG are more likely used for cooking in lower precipitation areas. Charcoal is also more likely used for cooking when the precipitation is lower while biomass is more likely used when the temperature is lower.
