Education, spending as a factor of students' academic performance in the Philippines

Abstract
Education has been considered as one of the most important means of human capital investment. This can be observed in the Philippines, where the country’s continually increasing budget allocation for education further emphasizes its priority as a national investment. The researchers thus proposed the problem statement: “To what extent is education spending a factor for basic academic performance in the Philippines?” To answer this question, the researchers ran a fixed-effects regression on the high school academic performance of 16 regions in the Philippines from the years 2006 to 2010 to evaluate if the education spending significantly affects the achievement of the students. The results showed that the education budget has a small yet positive effect on the students’ achievement. Other factors that affect students’ achievement are the socio-economic variables and the school competition variable.
