This paper quantifies the effects of fluctuating prices of gasoline and diesel on the Manila Light Rail Transit System Line 1 (LRT 1) train ridership and the level of air pollution in the National Capital Region (NCR) of the Philippines. The researchers used normalized time series data from 1985 to 2014. Using a simple OLS regression, the results show that the rising prices of gasoline and diesel are associated with higher transit ridership of the LRT. This result is statistically significant. Higher gasoline and diesel prices decrease the level of air pollution but the relationship is not statistically significant.
