Abstract
Various studies have been conducted by numerous economists and statisticians, in an attempt to trace the beginnings of crime. From the economic status, and the way a criminal· thinks, a lot of factors· were taken into consideration. One of the biggest reasons though, why an individual might choose to partake in illegitimate activities is when the necessity arises. The will to do crime, specifically crimes against property, all depends on what the perceived costs and benefits are. Poorer people's perception of benefits would be relatively higher and their perception of costs would be lower, as compared to their richer neighbors. It is seen that individuals would undertake extreme operations, such as threatening to hurt or kill, or even hurting and killing others just to transfer some of the wealth to themselves. We show in this paper how the economic status, along with other related factors, would affect the crime rates in the provinces of the Philippines.
