The Economic Impact of China's Entry to the World Trade Organization on Philippine Trade of Industrial Manufactures examines the recent effects of the trade liberalization policies initiated by China on its pre-WTO membership and on its actual accession in December 2001. The industrial manufactures sector is expected to be affected the most since it is the greatest contributor to the export earnings of the Philippine economy. It is considered as one of the fastest-growing industries in China as well. This study concentrates on quantitative and qualitative aspects of the trade in machineries and electronic equipment in the two countries. The gradual opening up of the Chinese global market and its impacts on China itself and on the ASEAN are taken into account. Using the Revealed Comparative Advantage (RCA) method as the framework of the study, the competitiveness of Philippine industrial products compared to that of China is analyzed in detail. Data used include the export and import values of the Philippines and China and the total world export and import values of the Harmonized System (HS) 84-85 from 1996-2000. The RCA method is intended to search for Philippine niches in the industrial manufactures sector. By disaggregating HS 84-85 into a 6-digit classification level, the competitive niches of each country are determined. The study indicates that the trade values of China and the Philippines both have complementing and competing products that lead to trade creation and trade diversion, respectively.
