| dc.description.abstract | Much of international labor migration originates in Southeast and South Asia, with an increasing number of women taking part in cross-border movements in search for work. This is being referred to as the «feminization of labor migration." This study considers the feminization trend globally and relates it to Philippine labor migration. We explore this phenomenon using trend analysis and reviewing related previous studies. Interviews with some Filipino women migrants were also conducted, to gain an in -depth understanding of the phenomenon. We :find that the majority of the Filipino women migrants provide domestic services which make them vulnerable to abuse and violation of human rights, though positive impacts are also observed in terms of the remittances sent to their families and local communities in the Philippines. The global care chain is seen at the core of the trend. The development of the service sector in developed nations has provided employment opportunities that attract women in particular. Given that the government has been promoting the development of the OFW sector, we conclude that the feminization of labor migration will likely continue. | |
