Abstract
This paper aims to present the potential impact of relevant trade policies, implemented by the Philippine government, on the attainment of a globally competitive automobile industry. These new policies intend to prepare the Philippine automobile industry for the coming liberalized trading regime beginning the year 2000. At this future date, local content requirements will be abolished and proceedingly, tariffs on finished cars will be lowered. This paper includes the general policy program of the Philippines as well as those of its fellow Southeast Asian countries, namely Thailand, Indonesia and Malaysia. This paper analyzes the different policies using a general framework of the effects of trade liberalization. With this, the effects of present policies are gauged with regard to their merits of allowing the industry participants to achieve global competitiveness, and presents the potential effects if these countries opt or continue to liberalize their regimes.
