Differential farm productivity across different farm tenure groups

| dc.description.abstract | Many other sectors of the economy depend largely on the agricultural sector's ability to produce raw materials; hence, the health and performance of agriculture reflect the performance of the economy as a whole. Many studies, both local and international, have shown different levels of agricultural productivity among farmers. This difference in productivity is not only attributable to customary factors of production such as capital, labor and inputs but also on how the farm is operated. This thesis takes the case of rice- farmers in Leyte operating under different forms of tenure to find out whether their respective tenure contracts influence their productivities significantly. To determine the significance of tenure type on productivity this thesis uses an Ordinary Least Squares method of estimation. At a 5% level of significance, all tenure arrangements are insignificant but at a 20% significance level, rent-free farms and those held under CLT/CLOA come out to be significant. Tenure arrangements remain important as they show relatively noteworthy differences in farm productivity. This study also finds that Agrarian Reform Beneficiaries (ARBs) yield a relatively higher productivity than other forms of tenure that may be attributed to the support services that they take advantage of. This implies that the Comprehensive Agrarian Reform Program plays a substantial role in the country's agricultural performance. | |
