| dc.description.abstract | The issue of fertility does not only encompass quality of family life but also national welfare and growth. Population growth reduction has been one of the targets of government intervention policies in order to attain economic development. For this reason, there is a pressing need to determine the indicators that may possibly alter the population's reproductive behavior. Using data from the 2003 National Demographic and Health Survey, the study aims to define the socioeconomic variables that affect fertility rates in the Philippines. It classifies the dependent variables into three subgroups: the woman's characteristics (her age, educational attainment, and presence of work), the husband's characteristic (educational level), and socioeconomic characteristics (wealth quintile, usage of traditional contraceptives, usage of modem contraceptives, duration of marriage, religion, interaction variables (age at marriage and traditional contraceptive use) and (age at marriage and modem contraceptive use). Despite the fact that fertility choice rests mainly with couple, the study shows that socioeconomic factors have great influence in childbearing decisions. Modem contraceptive use and wealth are negatively associated with fertility. Education remains to be an important indicator for it promotoes awareness to contraceptive usage. Thus, efforts on population growth reduction must be directed towards providing access to education and modem contraceptives. | |
